Emre Akal is an author and director based in Munich. His works operate at the interface between choreography, installation and image composition. His plays have been performed at the Bakirköy Municipal Theater in Istanbul, the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin and the independent scene in Munich, Stuttgart and Vienna.

Emre Akal’s play “Ostwind” was awarded the Dance and Theater Prize of the City of Stuttgart and the State of Baden-Württemberg in 2015. In 2017, Emre Akal and Rieke Süßkow co-directed the production “Heimat in Dosen”  which won the 10th jury prize at the Theater Drachengasse young talent competition in Vienna.

Following his directorial works “Mutterland …. stille” and “Frau F. hat immer noch Angst”, his futuristic play “Nur ihr wisst, ob wir es geschafft werden!” premiered at HochX in Munich in 2019. Emre also took part in the International Forum of the Theatertreffen Berlin as a scholarship holder in 2019.

In 2019, he founded the “Ayşe X Staatstheater” together with 85 other artists from all over Germany as a possible future model for intersectional diversified theater practice.

In 2020, Emre Akal was awarded the City of Munich’s Theater Prize.

“Emre Akal’s work shows that great artistic vision and a flat hierarchy are not mutually exclusive. That meticulous research and concentrated formal language are not contradictory. That things can’t go on like this in the theatre, but that they can go on,” according to the jury.

He wrote the episode “re vo lu tion” for the writing project NEUROPA as part of the WIENER WORTSTAETTEN.

Emre Akal’s play “Hotel Pink Lulu” was the 2020 exile drama prize winner. The world premiere took place on November 19, 2021 at Schauspiel Leipzig.
